 Accommodation Guides

Hey future lawyers!

This email provides you with a guide to requesting accommodations for the Bar Exam in Maryland. The State Board of Law Examiners oversees accommodations for the Bar Exam in Maryland.

The email provides the following:

  • A list of required documents and instructions for requesting accommodations.
  • Deadlines and relevant notes.
  • Links to relevant forms and information.
If you have any questions please reach out to Professor Kempler at nkempler@ubalt.edu.

Please note: We highly encourage students to follow the exact instructions on the form. This email is to help you prepare and understand the process. If document requirements change it will be reflected in the form.

Documents Needed:

Gathering documents may take a while and use up a lot of spoons. We recommend breaking down the tasks required to get these documents into smaller tasks.

1. Applicant Accommodations Request Form: The AAR Form is located on the Maryland State Board of Law Examiner's Website. When filling out the form it will ask you about your request for accommodations. SBLE asks that you are specific about your requests. For example, if you ask for extra time, be specific about how much time you are requesting.

2. Evaluation Reports from Health Professionals: You must provide copies of evaluation reports from health professionals that include requests for specific accommodations. Most formal evaluations will include this. If you never received a formal evaluation from your health professional, request one as soon as possible.

3. Letter from Law School & College (if any): You must get a letter from UB Law describing accommodations you have received for law exams. It must be signed by an authorized person from the Office of Disability and Access Services. Information here. You should also attach letters from your previous schools, signed by the Disability Coordinator or relevant staff, specifying any accommodations received.

4. Out of State: MPRE and Other Law Exams: If you took the MPRE or another law exam test outside the state you need to attach documented accommodations. Further, you must attach any communications regarding requesting accommodations.

5. Standardized Test Score Reports: You must include your standardized test score reports from the SAT/ACT, LSAT, and MPRE. If you received accommodations you must include the requests and any documents showing communications regarding accommodation requests.
Important Note: If you did not get accommodations for these tests you are required to attach a separate, signed letter, notifying the SBLE. It must be attached to your request application.

6. Academic Transcripts: Copies of certified academic transcripts from both undergraduate and law schools. Please note, these are specially requested and cannot be simply downloaded.
Visit this link to request certified transcripts from UB Law. Certified transcripts cost $10 and are available in electronic or print format.

7. Other Items: you may also attach any relevant materials that show a disability and "help assess the degree of impairment arising from the disability."

NOTE: If you are lacking any documentation from your school you may request your school to complete the Certification of ADA Accommodations History Form.
